HOTEL REVIEW: Saxon Hotel & Villas, Johannesburg

At the heart of the City of Gold in the tree-lined suburb of Sandhurst, lies the enchanting Saxon Hotel.

The all-suite boutique hotel is located in the tranquil ambassadorial suburb of Sandhurst about 20 miles from the Johannesburg International Airport.

Oozing luxury, sophistication and style, this property is a uniquely perfect blend of rich cultural history and contemporary five-star service. It is situated on ten acres of magnificent indigenous gardens, providing a private and peaceful retreat like no other.

The award-winning hotel is set amongst Johannesburg’s most prestigious residences and was the writing retreat during Nelson Mandela’s memoir “A Long Walk to Freedom”

Rooms

With contemporary South African architecture and art, The Saxon’s suites are outfitted with upscale amenities for an incredibly comfortable overnight in Johannesburg. All suites offer a king size bed, elegant lounge area, an open-plan bath and dressing area with an oversized bathtub, a walk-in rain shower, separate washroom with his and hers twin counter spaces, lush bathrobes and slippers and Molton Brown amenities.

The three stand-alone Saxon Luxury Villas offer the ultimate African hospitality and can be booked in their entirety for sole use by our guests who prefer the privacy and exclusivity of a garden setting. Each Villa has a main lounge and dining room in addition to a breakfast area and bar, with dedicated 24-hour butler service and chef. The Villa guests can enjoy the privacy of the terrace and plunge pool overlooking the gardens, or alternatively make use of the main Hotel facilities. A private elevator leads from the parking area to each of the Villas.

The ultimate in a home away from home, the Villas include in suite check-in, breakfast, complimentary full mini bar and snacks, high speed WiFi, in suite entertainment, use of Spa hydro facilities, a bottle of French Champagne on arrival, Whisky and Cognac in suite, laundry and pressing (excluding dry cleaning), fully equipped butler’s kitchen, VIP airport meet and greet including return transfer, personal butler, newspaper daily, parking, bottled mineral water, fresh flowers, access to fitness centre.

The Villas are a great option for groups or families travelling who require more space and the privacy of their own lounge and dining areas.

Dining

The dining at the Saxon is just as fine and exquisite as the property itself. It is more of a culinary adventure as the Chefs take you on a experiential journey. The main restaurant, Qunu offers an innovative menu with bold flavours and an honest approach to cuisine, using only the finest South African cuts of meat, the freshest fish, handpicked seasonal ingredients and carefully selected produce from local artisans. The Terrace is the central meeting point of the Saxon and serves up a refreshing cup of tea, cocktail or a delicious lunch in the outdoors. Morning and Afternoon Tea is served in the Piano Lounge, the ideal venue for taking a much-needed break from your busy day to catch up with friends over a cup of perfectly infused tea. Then if the need arises for a late night snack, there is always room service.
