Hotel Review: The Datai Langkawi

Imagine a place where a blanket of lush rainforest flows all the way down to the beach where lapping waves caress the sand from cool, calm waters of the bay. Sounds like paradise right? This is what greets you at The Datai Langkawi.

Set on the north‑western tip of Langkawi island in Malaysia, The Datai Langkawi offers a rare fusion of untouched rainforest and pristine beach that feels like an escape from the ordinary.

From arrival, the drive winds through lush foliage until you reach an open‑air lobby overlooking ancient trees and the turquoise stretch of Datai Bay. Here, architecture and nature are woven together — the resort was originally designed by renowned architect Kerry Hill to blend seamlessly into the environment.

Guests are enveloped in serenity as much as luxury, with the sounds of jungle life intermingling with high‑end service and natural splendour.

Stay

Choosing your room at The Datai Langkawi is going to be the hardest decision to make, as each offers its own uniqueness. I stayed in one of the Canopy Collection rooms (the Rainforest Canopy Room), which immediately impressed me with its generous space, polished timber floors, floor‑to‑ceiling windows and a private balcony looking out over the rainforest canopy. The décor was elegant but not overdone, letting the natural surroundings become part of the room’s personality. The minibar was well‑stocked, the flat‑screen TV discreetly tucked in, and the bathroom featured twin vanities and a large walk‑in rain‑shower and a massive stone bath tub.

For those wanting to step up the indulgence, The Datai also offers Rainforest Villas — stilted timber homes with wrap‑around terraces and some with private plunge pools — and Beach Villas with direct access to the sand, large living spaces and butler service. There are also suites and a grand estate villa for families or special occasions.

Service in‑room was discrete yet attentive, and quiet moments on the balcony became unexpected highlights of my stay.

Eat

Dining at The Datai is sophisticated yet rooted in local flavours and the surrounding forest‑to‑table ethos. In‑villa dining was available and executed with the same attention as the restaurants — one evening I chose a simple satay meal at my balcony table, and the following morning I savoured a full breakfast spread, coffee in hand, while listening to the birds in the trees, at The Dining Room. Here, breakfast is not just your first meal of the day, it is a chance to kick start your morning with fresh food and one of the best health bars I have ever seen (they even have bee pollen to add to your cereal).

At The Beach Club and The Beach Bar, you can enjoy all day dining with the perfect beachfront escape with its shaded seating area under trees overlooking the turquoise Andaman Sea with Tarutao Island in the distance. This is certainly the spot to enjoy a sunset cocktail or light lunch before a swim.

One of the resort’s standout venues is The Gulai House which offers refined Malaysian cuisine in a dramatic heritage house.

On another evening I enjoyed the tastes of Thailand in the canopy at The Pavilion, perched atop 30-metre stilts into the rainforest.

The variety across venues means that whether you’re in the mood for formal fine dining or casual beachfront elegance, the culinary experience matches the resort’s overall tone of relaxed grandeur.

Spa & wellness

The spa at The Datai is a sanctuary tucked into the wilderness. I booked a rainforest‑view treatment room for a signature “Rainforest Therapy” massage, and the sense of calm before the appointment—from a deck looking into the canopy—was profound. The spa complex includes a holistic pavilion, sauna and steam‑rooms, plus the resort’s Nature Centre where you can join guided walks through the jungle or partake in forest‑bathing sessions. The fitness centre and adult‑only pool offer further wellness options, while the beach provides opportunities for yoga at dawn or snorkelling in calm shallows.

I ended my stay with a Sound Healing session, where I lay by the beach in the fringe of the rainforest and was guided into a meditative state with sound bowl healing. In short, the resort doesn’t just invite relaxation — it facilitates transformation.

Activities

The Datai Langkawi offers a diverse and immersive range of experiences that invite guests to connect deeply with the island’s natural environment, cultural heritage, and community. Every activity has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the resort’s deep-rooted philosophy of harmony with nature, and many are guided by experts in their field – from resident naturalists to seasoned chefs and marine biologists.

For those drawn to the outdoors, guided rainforest walks are a must. Led by the resort’s resident naturalists, these explorations through a 10-million-year-old rainforest reveal the secrets of Langkawi’s rich biodiversity. Wildlife encounters with dusky langurs, hornbills, colugos, and macaques are common, and night walks offer the chance to experience the jungle’s after-dark rhythm. Guests can also kayak through the mangroves, snorkel off the private beach, or sail on Gadis Pulao, The Datai’s 54-foot luxury catamaran for a half-day or sunset cruise among Langkawi’s unspoilt islets.

On land, The Els Club Teluk Datai golf course offers world-class play with dramatic jungle and ocean vistas. Tennis and padel courts are available for lessons or casual games, and the LUX Tennis programme provides coaching from professional-level players.

Cultural engagement is encouraged through cooking classes at The Dapur, where guests can learn traditional Malaysian recipes using herbs and spices grown in the resort’s own permaculture garden. Artisanal workshops and storytelling sessions allow guests to experience the island’s indigenous culture, crafts, and folklore first-hand.

Integral to the activity offering is The Datai’s commitment to sustainability, delivered through its The Datai Pledge program – a far-reaching initiative centred around four pillars: Pure for the Future, Wildlife for the Future, Fish for the Future, and Youth for the Future. Guests are encouraged to participate in conservation-driven experiences such as coral reef restoration activities, beach clean-ups, and marine education with the resort’s own marine biologist. Visiting the Nature Centre – built entirely from reclaimed materials – offers an eye-opening journey through local ecosystems, biodiversity and the impact of conservation work on the local environment.

Through these experiences, The Datai goes beyond traditional luxury to foster a sense of purpose and connection. Whether you’re walking through the rainforest, paddling through mangroves, cooking with local ingredients, or taking part in a conservation effort, each moment here is designed to be meaningful – both for the guest and the world beyond the resort.

Hot tip

Request a buggy transfer from your villa after dark to see fireflies over the mangroves — the contrast of soft jungle light and the star‑filled sky is magical. Also, book ahead for the nature‑walks with the resort’s naturalists early in your stay to ensure you get a spot at dawn.
