HOTEL REVEIW: Sofitel Luang Prabang

A part of the Accor Group, Sofitel Luang Prabang is one of the most luxurious properties in the peaceful town in Northern Laos.

Located in Ban Mano, a sleepy residential area a short 10-minute bike ride from the Luang Prabang old town centre, guests can walk to the markets at night or explore the area with ease.

At the Sofitel Luang Prabang, local heritage and French art de vivre unite to offer a timeless elegance in a sophisticated setting that is expected from the Sofitel brand.

The Property

Set on the grounds of what once was the French Governor’s residence in 1900s, this old charm has been restored where possible and evident the moment you arrive. The two wooden houses that are on either side of the reception create a beautiful Laotian style courtyard.

The all-suite hotel rooms are arranged around a tropical courtyard, gorgeous water feature, sculptures and a large pool surrounded by a wooden deck. The pool area is the perfect place to relax in the afternoons with a drink and during the cooler months, there is even a fireplace. Make sure you keep an eye out for the resident rabbits that hop about.

Rooms

The Sofitel Luang Prabang has 25 suites; 17 garden suites, 3 heritage suites, 4 pool villas and 1 Signature Governor’s Residence (two-bedroom suite). Each suite has a generous high ceiling, decorated with Laotian artefacts and their own private garden. The king-sized, four column hand-carved posted bed along with the shuttered windows lend a touch of old-world nostalgia.

Bathrooms offer rain shower, indoor bathtub, and dressing area. Then the suite opens into a garden with outdoor gazebo and bathtub (or plunge pool depending on the suite). A MyBath menu offers an array of invigorating bath rituals for both indoors and outdoors relaxation.

Dining

Dining is offered at Governor’s Grill steakhouse. Enjoy an alfresco setting with the option to dine under the tented area or outside on the patio. The food offerings include a fusion of traditional Lao cuisine with its distinctive spices and flavours and western gastronomy. Funny enough, there is no steak on the menu here, instead you can try the buffalo, a traditional red meat in Laos. Here, guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Throughout the day, guests can also treat themselves to coffee, refreshments and French pastries.

For a unique dining experience, guests can head on the free shuttle between Sofitel to dine at the gorgeous 3 Nagas, a sister hotel and restaurant that is also part of the Accor collection. The evening is a true traditional Laotian experience, not only with the cuisine but also the entertainment and dancing.
