In celebration of the centenary year for Nelson Mandela, visitors to South Africa are invited to experience his legacy at 100 destinations across the country.
South Africa Tourism has partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation for this unique initiative that will allow for visitors to experience some of Mandela’s favourite travel spots and the places he enjoyed visiting along with attractions and destinations around South Africa that have strong historical and social ties to his life.
From the rolling hills and scattered villages of Qunu in the Eastern Cape, the prison cells of Robben Island, to the sacred sidewalk on Vilakazi Street in Soweto – follow in the footsteps to freedom of South Africa’s most iconic hero.
Furthermore, on July 18, 2018, the world will celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, a 100 years since the birth of this great leader.
There is an app for the tech savvy travellers to use, featuring 100 tourist attractions of significance in the life of the iconic leader Nelson Mandela, one for each year he spent behind bars as a political prisoner. Users can view the attractions on a map, build their own itineraries and share their own journeys on social media.
The interactive app also allows users to experience the emotion and relevance of each location through audio, text and image galleries. The app also offers real-time weather information, distances and details of nearby attractions.
These range from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Robben Island, where he was imprisoned, his post-presidential office at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory to Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where he was laid to rest.
“This app is inspired by a true South African Icon, and users now have the ability to find, experience and share some of the best attractions, places of interests and unique content we have ever been able to put together as part of this ‘Madiba-Inspired tourist attractions’ offering. As we remember the historic year of Madiba’s release from prison, we would like to encourage everyone to use the app to discover some of the stories behind the legend,” says Minister of Tourism in South Africa, Derek Hanekom.
Download the Madiba’s Journey app, walk in the footsteps of greatness and find the Nelson Mandela in you.
